Josh Byrne & Associates (JBA) is pleased to announce that it has become a National Finalist in the Greenlife Infrastructure category in the 2014 Nursery & Garden Industry Awards for work undertaken at the Perth Cultural Centre for the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority (MRA).
This award recognises the contribution of Urban Planners, Local Councils, Architects, and Developers in promoting a thriving, sustainable and diverse Australian Urban Forest. Judges consider the unique attributes of each project in particular, how it contributes to a healthy ecosystem that is valued and cared for by all Australians. Judges also assess how the ‘greenlife’ specified within the project has evolved into an environmental, economic, and community asset.
The Perth Cultural Centre (PCC) has undergone a major transformation as part a revitalisation project led by the MRA on behalf of the State Government, with a main goal of transforming the precinct into a major destination and a ‘place of discovery’ for all cultures and ages. The brief was to adopt creative place-making strategies to activate the space whilst integrating innovative landscape design with strong sustainability objectives.
JBA’s role was delivered in two stages. The first stage included the conversion of a chlorinated water feature into a freshwater ecology wetland, a productive organic community garden on top of an existing multi-storey car park, as well as the rejuvenation of a number of existing garden beds with diverse WA plant species. Stage 2 focused on the delivery of an interactive natural based play space, as well as a range of community engagement activities/events to build community ownership of the site whilst fostering learning about sustainability.
JBA continues to deliver a community engagement events and activities at the PCC as well as act as the Landscape Maintenance Superintendent on behalf of MRA.
