Design Guidelines for Public Open Space in Queens Park
A best-practice framework shaping high-quality, resilient and connected public open spaces across Queens Park
The City of Canning required a consistent approach to planning and designing public open spaces in response to population growth, changing community needs and increasing environmental expectations. JBA developed the Queens Park Public Open Space Design Guidelines to establish best-practice design principles that future-proof the City's park network while enhancing community wellbeing, environmental performance and local identity.
JBA combined landscape architecture and sustainability expertise to develop the guidelines, drawing on City policy, state and national best practice, demographic analysis and community engagement. We classified 13 existing and future public open spaces and translated this evidence into practical design guidance across the themes of Connection and Safety, Place, Sustainability and Environment, and Landscape Design and Infrastructure. The framework was subsequently applied through the master planning, detailed design and delivery of Maniana Park and informed JBA's landscape architecture work for the adjoining Sam Kerr Football Centre.
The guidelines provide the City with a practical framework for planning, designing and assessing future public open space projects across Queens Park. By connecting strategic objectives with site-specific design decisions, they support consistent, high-quality outcomes that improve accessibility, strengthen biodiversity, enhance environmental performance and create parks that respond to the changing needs of the community. The framework continues to guide the delivery of resilient, inclusive and distinctive public open spaces across the precinct.
